Hyundai Reliability

When we think about a rough, dependable vehicle, what comes to mind? A durable American made brand, like Ford or Chevy? Or possibly a Dodge Ram for all the bravado displayed in their television advertisements? No one stops to think, however, about the foreign made cars, especially since the explosion of globalization has created an influx of cheaply made products from overseas into every day circulation. For this, I cannot blame wary sentiments surrounding foreign manufactured vehicles. However, Hyundai has proved time and time again that they can continuously produce reliable vehicles.

Just how reliable is the South Korean based car manufacturer? Hyundai has been named the most reliable car brand multiple times; in 2011 and 2013 (by CarMD) and in 2015 came in ninth place according to CNN . But how exactly is reliability measured? And how does Hyundai compare to other vehicle manufacturers? One factor that was examined was repairs; how often repairs occurred and the overall cost of said repairs. In the 2013 report produced by CarMD, it was determined that Hyundai had the lowest repair frequency and the second-lowest overall repair cost. It should be noted that this particular report looked at 119 million total vehicles, so the fact that Hyundai topped this list is a feat in and of itself.

So the numbers can prove that, at least when repairs are considered, Hyundai produces a reliable product. But if the reliability isn’t consistent, how can the company be trusted? Hyundai doesn’t disappoint on this level either. In 2017, Telegraph surveyed car manufacturer’s car reliability, placing Hyundai in eighteenth place, citing 130 problems per 100 vehicles. A number, called a Reliability Index, can also be assessed; Hyundai has been placed in sixteenth place with a score of 100 (which is above average).

So we’ve talked about reliability and consistency and how Hyundai is ranked overall compared to other vehicle manufactures. And while they are on the lower end of receiving repairs, should repairs be the only variable taken into account when considering how reliable a vehicle is? If this is not the only factor, what else needs to be looked at? Another key indicator of vehicle reliability and dependability is the length and depth of the warranty. Hyundai offers a 5-year warranty with unlimited miles while other providers tend to offer a shorter term warranty with fewer miles covered. Why does something as simple as a vehicle warranty raise the reliability of a particular car brand? Such an in-depth warranty relays the message to the consumer that the manufacturer is confident in the product they produce, which in turn allows the consumer to be content due to the fact that if something bad were to happen, it would be covered under the warranty.

What makes Hyundai so desirable a vehicle to own? Reliability plays a crucial role when a consumer is contemplating a serious purchase, such as a new vehicle. Hyundai has proved itself, time and time again, that it can produce a reliable product, not only by keeping repairs few and far between but also by keeping costs low. In addition, offering customers an extended warranty not only produces peace of mind for the consumer but also keeps the pressure on the company to continue producing quality products.
